Worldwide agarwood?

#1
Hello All,
a subject I keep thinking about every now and then:
Would it not be possible to plant agarwood trees in other tropical countries such as, for example, South America?
I mean, would that not help to increase the overall mass of trees, and thus help protect the agarwood tree from extinction?

Also, South America is far away from China, therefore the trees would not so easily bought / cut down by "lucky wood" hunters, right?

Of course the scent profile will be different, but isn´t that something we look for in our Oud?
Maybe South American oud could even surpass Vietnamese wood / Kyara!

Looking forward to hear your opinions!

It's almost impossible to pull off, given that the seeds only live about 24 hrs, and must be planted in tropical soil. Hypothetically, it sounds possible, but it's been tried and tested, with little success.

One of my distillers visited us in New York one time, and brought fresh seeds of aquilaria agallocha which we planted in my backyard. He said it would be futile, but here's to it anyway. We got nothing from it.

I haven't heard of any attempts in South America but would assume the land is reserved for quick turnaround investments like coffee and yerba mate, as opposed to a 20-year turnaround as is the case with agarwood.

Adam and Ensar,

Thanks for your answers! While I doubt I could ever keep an agarwood tree sapling alive here in Germany (given the general climate, long cold winter with little sunlight etc.) I find the idea of having my own little tree in my backyard very appealing! Maybe I should move to the tropics some time later in my life ;-)

However, it is just an idea that came to me some time ago -- only to return sometimes and keep me fascinated...

I thought it would be nice if, based on this idea, farmers of agarwood could make a an effort to protect and increase the numbers of this very special plant, this incredible source of spiritual bliss and fascination...

In my understanding we all are responsible for Nature in general, and for those plants and animals we use for food etc. especially. After all, mankind is just one among all the wonderful species inhabting Earth, and we are connected to them, depending on them for our survival -- more than the other way around.

Let us all hope the organic approach of agarwood farming will help us see a brilliant future of Oud in the decades (and centuries) to come!

Kind regards,
Thomas S.

Thomas , dont listen to anyone , they want to steal your idea =)
you even can buy few month old tree and grow it indoors =) under lamps, using CO2 powder and other organic additives =) just ask and they will send you the best tropical soil as well =)
@Adam:
Do not worry: I just filed for copyright... they will all have to pay me for the license of my ideas ;-)

No, honestly: I don´t care -- as long as we get plenty of Oud oils and agarwood to burn =)

There are Growers in Kerela India that mail saplings , but you have to go through the CITES regulation and Customs , I personally stop buying Oud cause we are the reason of the Downfall of Oud , but when I go back home to Bangladesh I refill my Oud oils , money goes back to poor villagers , and feels good actually buying it from a source I can trust , not up rooting all the trees in the world , we need more hippies in is this world , Hence best thing to do is purchase directly from Plantations , It gives a reason to go on vacation and buy Cultivated Oud , Don't get me wrong , I buy from Eden Botanical also , there Vietnam Oil is intense and the price is right and rest assure , you will not feel like you are the reason why there are no more trees , peace bros , If I sounded offensive please forgive me , I am only human and my heart is talking for the Oud
