Oud Oil 101

Just Ignore all the badmouhts

Ensar, I definitely think you should just ignore all the people who badmouth you and your company without knowing what their assets and possibilities are.

Everyone wants premium oudh, but not everyone can afford it. I for example am saving to get some oudh from you, and anticipation or desperation will not get to me because I don't have enough money to afford it yet.

Everyone should know what their budget limits are, and analyze the market and quality in a very objective way, and draw the conclusion for themselves.

It's merely like accusing Rolls Royce that Bentley or Jaguar has lower prices.
An example of Seller's Remorse is when I parted with Kemegahan and Sempurna, now I regret it, that's on me. Geez, I almost parted with Tigerwood 1995 but the person who was interested in it said, "I won't take your only bottle of TW1995", what a classy guy, he knew the value of what I had more than I.
An example of Buyer's Remorse is when a Buyer regrets a purchase that he/she made, wether it was a disappointing blind buy, or irresponsible spending. But that's on the Buyer not the Seller:eek:

Hey Robert! I hope I did not imply that AK is somehow substandard as it is one of my favorites, (as is PK!), but there are big differences once you get to the K1 and some of the others. BUT, there is no doubt that olfactory perception and ideals are individual so YMMV.
*sigh*

You realise that you just made life ever more expensive for me? Now to see if I can get anyone to sell me .1g

Ok, the subliminal Nha Trang messaging is messing with my pea brain!

Very interesting discussion by all with many really good points. From my n=1 vantage point, no matter how much one tries to pass off a mass produced car as a Bentley, it won't be a Bentley. I believe the same is true for the Oud market. As Adam said, there appear to be some who cannot tell a difference or just do not care, but for most, once you try the really good stuff, it re-calibrates your perceptions. At least that is my experience. Sometimes that is not a good thing. When I was younger, I was into stereo music and equipment. I though what I had sounded great and I was very proud of it. Unfortunately, I wandered into a high-end audio store and heard a Wilson Audio system. Needless to say, I came out depressed. It made my stuff sound like crap and there was no way to afford it.

My Oud experience has been a bit different, as many lower priced oils are incredible, (my SOTD Aroha Kyaku is a perfect example) but if you really get into the transcendental qualities of Kynam 1 or Royal Guallam, you realize that it is a COMPLETELY different level. To get there, like with WIlson Audio and Bentley, there is going to be a major premium. And for that, here will always be a market.
Kesiro my friend, spot on. Kynam No1 changed everything for me. TO ME, notice I said to me, my opinion, etc, it has been worth every penny. I have never regretted buying it one bit. Each time I wear it I'm a bit more amazed at its complexity, and more importantly what it does to me. In fact, considering these profound effects, on a cost/benefit analysis, per unit of weight/volume, it is the best value I own.

And I'm sure this will be taken as the final proof of my thorough "brainwashing", but the truth is the OIL is what has me utterly bewitched. I'd gladly spend the same on another oil that does the similar things to me, regardless of the vendor. So there you go, distill another K1 equivalent at the same price and I will buy it on the spot. Offer it for half an I will take two.

And this doesn't mean I don't like and wear sub-thousand dollar oils, I do. In fact I wear them routinely. But there is a genre of oils that I have yet to encounter elsewhere, and these are my favorite oils. Vietnamese and Chinese with the kinam profile like K1 and Kyara LTD Private. So like kesiro and the Wilson Audio and the Bentley, at times I will choose those oils over others. To ME, they are more my style and preference. And I feel they are superior oils.

My general sense is that the major players (Ensar, Taha, Adam, ASO, IO, AI) in our niche/artisan oud world price their oils pretty fairly, in terms of the quality in relation to each other, and with respect to the open market factors like cost of materials, demand, etc.. What seems clear is that each of these artisans are great appreciators of fine oud, and have a good idea how a given oud of theirs will stack up in relation to other ouds in the market.. I've never felt like I got a bad deal from any of these artisans, let's put it that way.. And I very much enjoy the colorful and sometimes boastful oil descriptions, and tales of adventure and intrigue and mysticism that often accompany these descriptions - it all seems part of the artistic expression, and gives words and images to the subjective experience of the oil itself.. The artist has good reason be proud and enthusiastic..

In the case of Ensar, he offers quite a range of oils, and all seem priced fairly to me.. Some are exceptionally good deals - he releases rare, long-aged ouds that have no competition in the market - I mean, Oud Royale 1985 is a pure oud oil from 30 years ago, and everyone who has tried it knows it's the cat's pajamas in terms of scent profile and depth - he could charge whatever he wanted for it - and sold it at $550/3gm.. Same goes for Tigerwood Royale - it's a 15 year old pure oud oil that smells incredible - there is no competition in the open market for an oil like this, nor any way for a current distiller to make something like it - and he sells it for $550/3g..

I agree with you 100%. I have always felt I got my money's worth with these vendors, and for the specific examples you cite, I feel like I got a bargain.

Reminds me of the first time I tried Port Moresby, my jaw literally dropped, and then I realized, there is another level of oud. Top tier no doubt.

No doubt!!!! It was an eye opening experience when I tried PM and especially Kynam No.1. I bet dollars to donuts that those that criticize some of Ensar's high end oils have never tried them. Despite the insane cost, I here never experienced anything like them at any price.

I would almost guarantee it. I received a ton of criticism around Kynam No1 and my reaction to it, yet I don't believe anyone who gave me a hard time had ever experienced it. And it is just that, an experience, not just a scent. K1 wears me and takes me where it wants me to go, not the other way around. But it always guides me, in the kindest and gentlest way, to the most beautifully serene places. Never a bad trip here!

@bhanny Completely agree with you, Kynam no 1 is on another level. Those who have criticized you have no clue what they're talking about. It has easily become the crown of my collection, even beating Oud Sultani. I don't know, it doesn't beat Oud Sultani in terms of scent for me, but there's something more to it. It just does something to your mind. It makes you feel different.... like, a better version of your own self.

I haven't tried Port Moresby, Kynam no1, or Oud Sultani. Dang I would really love to smell those diamonds. What I have is the original Borneo 3000 and that is my holy grail. Have been cherishing it for 10 years now and still got 3/4 bottle left. For me I just have to open the bottle and take a nice deep whiff and many times, I don't realize how I stood at one spot for so long. :)

Somehow ... :) ... I spent $9000 for these 3 & I'm very happy with the purchase. Mostly I just uncap the bottles & inhale breath with the aroma. Good enough to live with my life.
