Where can I buy genuine Mysore Sandalwood oil?

#1
I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to answer this question, but I'll give it shot.
After trying good Japanese sandalwood sticks and sandalwood on the heater I'm interested in trying a fine Mysore oil.
I've tried the Indian Sandalwood oil from Ananda Apothecary, but I didn't like it.
It was harsh and "rubbery" in scent, not the beautiful, creamy, woody and tranquil scent I was expecting.

Does anyone know of any good places to buy a fine Indian Sandalwood oil?
I'm asking here since I don't want to throw away my money on a sub-par oil.

EDIT: I'm sorry, I meant to post this in the "Perfume" section.

Just to follow up on the posting above I read that "With fewer farmers growing sandalwood trees and rampant smuggling in some parts of the State, Shivanand Naik, chairperson, Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited, told presspersons during the unveiling of a new premium soap on Wednesday, “We're now getting sandalwood oil from Chennai and other States.” So even if you buy from Mysore vendors there is no guaranteeing that it is 100% Mysore Sandalwood. You should also read Trygve's own experience recently in Mysore at http://www.absolutetrygve.com/search?updated-max=2012-05-29T14:55:00-04:00
her entry dated March 26, 2012 half way down the page.

Bluemoon from Basenotes knows of a vendor in NY that sells official government sold Mysore sandalwood. She gave me the address but it It will take too long to find. Easier to ask her.

I believe that store is around 29 street and either Park Avenue south or 3rd avenue. It's an Indian specialty store and they sell the same bottle I have shown above. the problem is that they don't take phone orders and they don't ship and I think KAKAO lives in Norway.

Hey guys.

Here are two sites I'am sure sell the real thing:

1. attarbazaar.com(currently out of stock)

2. edenbotanicals.com(not sure if the quality is as good as above site)

This one is likely to have the real thing and was recommended on basenotes: purepro.com(the price seems right for the real stuff)

You can also buy chips of it (25 grams) from: scents-of-earth.com, the best site for authentic sandalwood, agarwood and Baieido green kyara chips(the kyara chip they sell is also cheaper than shoyeido, or you could try japanincense.com for the cheapest kyara of the same quality, but I don't know if they have the same reputation for trustworthiness)

Hope this helped you very much!

I could be wrong but I don't think The attarbazaar is the Real thing. It says "The finest first pressing sandalwood oil available on the earth! The one which sets the standard for sandal oils"!!! This is not Olive Oil to press. I had thought that Sandalwood is steam distilled. Also if you look closely there is no where were it says Essential oil. and the Copy says the oil is "from India" and did not specify Mysore. I remember MrP from BN mentioning that he contacted the owner to ask him about the "Purity and Naturalness" of they products but he was evasive. If some one else has a different experience, I would like to hear about it.

Sorry about that, masstika! Someone on basenotes it said was very nice, and the reviews would seem to indicate it being real. However, I'AM sure that edenbotanicals is pure, because they are well known and have a reputation to mantain.(They only state it is from India, though) For the wood and other incense, the best site I have ever found is scents-of-earth.com.

I hope KAKAO can buy it and use it with a smile on his face! Amin.

I would also totally agree with you on Eden Botanicals. I have bought from them and they are very well reputed. The positive comments on BN regarding Attar were in reference to the other "Fragrances". I have however noted certain similarities/ concidences between certain frangrances they carry and other Natural perfumers like Profumo; see their Sherif http://www.attarbazaar.com/SearchResults.asp?Search=sherif and Profumo http://www.profumo.it/scents-of-the-soul/Sharif/pid/5229/ and their Oriental Kush at http://www.attarbazaar.com/Oriental-Kush-p/kush.htm and Profumo's http://www.profumo.it/scents-of-the-soul/Hindu-Kush/pid/109/ or it could all be a concidence.

Scents of earth is very good site indeed, Does anyone know if they are connected to Sensia http://www.sensia.com/index.htm and Baieido? and BTW, Japanese Incense is a very trust worth company. Both Kotaro and Jay are extremely helpful, knowledgeable and have a very goody selection of Japanese Incense at very good prices but I don't think they sell Sandalwood. Sorry I digressed so to go back, Profumo (ABdesalaam Attar) has very nice Sandalwood. http://www.profumo.it/shaikh_perfumes/prodotto/shaikh-perfumes/Sandalwood-Mysore-1993/pid/43.

So, to sum it all up:

Aqua Oleum: Real

Profumo: Real(very nicely aged)

La Boutique Bio: Real, but does NOT say Mysore on it.

Personally, I would buy from Profumo and save it for comparision. I would buy aqua oleum and let it age for 3-5 years, then apply it. :)

Thank you for all your answers!
You are so kind ;)

I thought about trying the Sri Lankan Sandalwood from White Lotus Aromatics.
It is from the Santalum Album tree, the same as Mysore Sandalwood, just planted in Sri Lanka.
I've been very happy with their products before, and seems to be an outstanding company.

i went on this adventure allready and found that ham firl has the best sandalwood oil ive ever sniffed. you have to buy his top shelf oil called, wild mysore royal double super fine. ive bought from all the places above and others(been scammed by a few ebay sellers) and found his oil supreme. he says its made for buddist monks to use for meditaion, it deff centers you while sniffing it. it has a warm butteryness to it unlike any other ive tried. i bought all he had a few years back. it smells just like a bottle of sandalwood oil i got from a friend thats mom used to make perfume in the 70's.

the second best is rkandsons. much cheaper but has a metalic note upon recieveing that bugged me but, after storing for about 2 years its very close to ham firls and the metalic note is completely gone. best price on the web imo.

it gets better and smoother. there are stories of people finding a vessel stored for many years(50+) and it still smells wonderful. ive got about a dozen oz's stashed for the end of the world. it has medicinal qualities that give it even more value. true wild mysore is almost a thing of the past. no more 125 yo trees to make oil from so if your lucky you might get some from a 40-80yo tree. if you cant get the wild then australian is your only choice and they mostly harvest at 7 years. although ive heard rumor a co is triing 35 years before they harvest but they still have a way to go and they might have it all reserved by now. all the wild things are disapearing fast on this earth. as long as its legal grab a piece before its all gone.

I buy my santal from Eden's Garden, I have tried many sources and this is the best current crop source i have found that fits into a perfumer's budget (in other words i use it in blends so cost is a factor. It is from Mysore, but the source of wood does not tell half the story. Good wood takes many decades to mature before yielding the buttery smell of good santalum album. Much of the wood in mysore is harvested way too young and the scent will never match that of mature mysore. I buy a lot of sri lankan santalum album from a source who seems to really be using mature trees and it does not havethe depth of A grade mysore, it certainly stands up to most of what is sold from mysore nowadays for a lesser price.

I noticed on the site. Edenbotanicals.com:
Sandalwood - Rare
Sandalwood - Royal Hawaiian
Someone you try these oils it, thank you.

Tarik, I do not see those oils on their website. However, I do have some "Royal Hawaiian" sandalwood from a different source, likely the one who supplied it to Eden Botanicals. It is extremely nice and lotusy. It is similar to Mysore Sandalwood, but it is not as deep and basey, it has a higher range, and very nice floral lotus-like top notes. Beautiful oil.

I have some 10yrs aged Mysore Sandalwood oil that I could sell you, if you still haven't found any. The days of sandalwood are truly over...at least for a while.
