ASQ Kalakassi 120 yrs today. And this oil has humbled me. It has decimated all the stories, the myths, the legends, the conspiracies surrounding the golden bird in the cage, Oud. I have sniffed almost all regional signatures, all artisanal signatures, copper and stainless signatures, prime notes and auxillary notes etc etc. I have gone through all the milestones like every Oud pilgrim. I deliberately do not use the word lover on this instance. And I have realised one thing if an Oud oil makes you happy, its worth it. And this is one of those oils, I do not know why, time forgot.
I have for reference all batches of Kalakassi and one Kannam. All Kalakassis share a sourly fermented berries top note after that all go in different directions. K80 is unanimously revered as the best. I don't care now what is what at this moment because this oil has cast a spell on me. It is PHENOMENAL. This is my third swipe today and I can confidently say gcms proof or not whatever little actual Kalakassi it contains it is simply magnificent on multiple levels.
The top has barn backed fermented fruits. Pretty unusual. Then the oil turns spicy sweet. Its powerful in the sillage dept for the first couple of hours. And I used a half swipe. I got two compliments from a family member. One even had the smell lingering from his hands which had merely brushed my shirt while greeting. And I kept watching him naughtily as he continuosly kept sniffing his hand. And when he just couldnt control the urge, he came up and asked me what I was wearing with a glitter in his eye.
Then comes the drydown of epic proportions a crossover between the sweet aged ouds and sandalwood. It is pure magic to the nose. Romance in the air. Full bodied soft golden hue which forms an aura of olfactory charisma around me. It feels divine.
At this moment I really don't know who made this oil or which technique was used, which utensils were used. One thing is for sure. It is a classic Agallocha Oil done by traditional protocols. And this has to be the soul of Oud. The one divine oil which graces masjids and mandirs, the holy oils which is used to scent the kiswat e kaaba, the holy scent which is used to smear the hajjar al aswad.
It is the BEST Oud I have sniffed to date. This would go well on a man or a woman, a chola or a tuxedo. It would work in all weathers all occassions. Is this what Oud is supposed to be ? That outwordly sweet whiffs which I simply cannot entrap in a wordcage. Bravo. And I feel a bit tipsy today, you can blame the oil. I am sure this is what Oud is supposed to be like even with an anamolous opening.
Btw, my oil is supplied from ASQ HQ in KSA.
